Our Strength is in the Lord our God
Anyone who has ever built a home or any other sort of building knows just how important the foundation is. Before a wall is built or a roof covers the structure, the foundation must be set firmly in place. A firm foundation requires an immense amount of work and preparation. If the foundation is built on shifting or unstable ground, the building will ultimately fail – it is just a matter of time.
In a very real sense, Jesus is challenging us as disciples to pay attention to the foundation that supports our daily life. In today’s Gospel, Jesus rightly notes that a spiritual house built upon a shaky foundation is bound to fail. Some of the folks who insult Jesus in the Gospel think he is mad – that he is in league with the devil himself. As Jesus notes, a house built on such a foundation will collapse against itself.
To some, however, building a house upon the foundation of Jesus may seem like utter insanity. Why would we wish to do such a thing? After all, a strong and secure life requires that we have the best of everything. Some say that an even better and more successful life is one in which we have achieved every measure of success that is possible, so that people admire or envy us, so that we have power and influence that we can wield in order to determine our own destiny. This is the most solid foundation upon which to build one’s life – from the world’s perspective.
Jesus reminds us that if our lives are built only upon power, influence, prestige or achievement, they will ultimately come tumbling down. At the conclusion of today’s Gospel, Jesus gives us a clue about what leads to true satisfaction. As he speaks to his disciples, he reminds us that the ultimate strength in our lives comes from a living and loving relationship with him and with the people of his Church.
If Jesus and the life to which he calls us become the central focus of our everyday living, then we live as members of his family – we are his brother and sisters. Like younger siblings, we have the opportunity to look up to Jesus, to emulate his ways of selfless life and love, to cooperate with his grace in order to bring peace and mercy more firmly into our world. Nuestra fortaleza está en el Señor nuestro Dios Cualquiera que haya construido una casa o cualquier otro tipo de edificio sabe cuán importante es la fundación. Antes de que se construya una pared o un techo cubra la estructura, la base debe colocarse firmemente en su lugar. Una base firme requiere una inmensa cantidad de trabajo y preparación. Si la base se construye sobre terreno movedizo o inestable, el edificio finalmente fallará; es solo cuestión de tiempo.
En un sentido muy real, Jesús nos desafía como discípulos a poner atención a la base que sostiene nuestra vida diaria. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos señala que una casa espiritual construida sobre un cimiento inestable está destinada a fallar. Algunas de las personas que insultan a Jesús en el Evangelio creen que está enojado o que él está aliado con el diablo. Como lo señala Jesús, una casa construida sobre tal base colapsará contra sí misma.
Para algunos, sin embargo, construir una casa sobre la base de Jesús puede parecer una completa locura. ¿Para que quisiéramos hacer tal cosa? Después de todo, para tener una vida buena y segura solo requiere que tengamos lo mejor de todo. Algunos dicen que una vida aún mejor y más exitosa es aquella en la que hemos logrado todo el éxito que sea posible, para que la gente nos admire o nos envidie, de modo que tengamos poder e influencias y asi poder determinar nuestro propio destino. desde la perspectiva del mundo, esta es la base más sólida sobre la cual debemos construir nuestra vida, .
Jesús nos recuerda que si nuestras vidas se basan únicamente en el poder, la influencia, el prestigio o el logro, al final se derrumbaran. Al concluir el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos da una pista sobre lo que conduce a la verdadera satisfacción. Al hablar con sus discípulos, nos recuerda que la fuerza máxima en nuestras vidas proviene de una relación viva y amorosa con El y con la gente de su Iglesia.
Si Jesús y la vida a la que él nos llama se convierten en el centro de nuestra vida cotidiana, entonces vivimos como miembros de su familia: somos sus hermanos y hermanas. Al igual que los hermanos menores, tenemos la oportunidad de seguir el ejemplo de Jesús, imitar su forma de vida, desinteresada y llena de amor, de cooperar con su gracia para traer más paz y misericordia a nuestro mundo. Qué alegría que Jesús nos enseñe con palabras y ejemplos a vivir nuestras vidas con su vida y amor como base y piedra angular. Dios les bendiga,
